Adolescents need to know there are people out there who care about them. Friends, family members, school counselors, teachers, or even physicians are people that they can talk to. The APA (American Psychiatric Association) says, "It must be a person who is very willing to listen and who is able to reassure the individual that depression and suicidal tendencies are very treatable". Different kinds of treatment may include therapy, medications, or the two combined. There are also numerous places that teens and their family members can find help. Family physicians, local hospitals, psychiatric departments within the hospitals, or even churches all offer counseling for the troubled teen and their family.
According to the article “Teen Suicide Prevention” by Teen US, “One of the most important aspects of teen suicide prevention is support. The teenager needs to know that you support and love him or her, and that you are willing to help him or her find hope in life again. One of the most effective ways to prevent teen suicide is to recognize the signs of suicidal thoughts and feelings, and seek professional help. Some of the most effective teen suicide prevention programs consist of identifying and treating the following problems: mental and learning disorders, substance abuse problems, problems dealing with stress, and behavior problems” (Teen Suicide).
The American Academy of Pediatrics offers these helpful tips:
-Ask your teenager about it. Don't be afraid to say the word "suicide". Getting the word out in the open may help your teenager think someone has heard his cries for help.
-Reassure him or her that you love them. Remind them that no matter how awful their problems seem, they can be worked out, and you are willing to help.
-Ask them to talk about their feelings. Listen carefully. Do not dismiss their problems or get angry at them.
-Remove all lethal weapons from your home, including guns, pills, kitchen utensils, and ropes.
-Seek professional help. Ask your teenager's pediatrician to guide you. A variety of outpatient and hospital-based treatment programs are available.
